acqua alta is the term used for the exceptional tide peaks that occur periodically and cause many problems for the inhabitants and buildings of Venice.
The nineteen-page graphic score for acqua alta consists of graph paper, fragments of paintings and the remains of water damaged music. I submerged a copy of Félix Godefroid’s solo harp composition Venise in water for two days. I then cut horizontal strips out of the water sections from reproductions of three paintings of Venice by Claude Monet. I positioned the horizontal strips on the graph paper of the first eight pages to indicate the frequency of Acqua Alta in Venice of more than 100cm, recorded by decade from 1920 to 2000. On the remaining pages, I used the strips to denote the differing levels of exceptional high waters in Venice documented since 1923. I arranged the surviving water damaged fragments of Godefroid’s Venise in relation to the water levels: the higher the water level the more fragments of score. The Monet paintings, The Palazzo Dario, San Giorgio Maggiore and San Giorgio Maggiore by Twilight are in the Gwendoline and Margaret Davies collection and are exhibited in the National Museum Wales where the first performance took place.
acqua alta was commissioned by the Gregynog Festival with support from Tŷ Cerdd and first performed by Rhodri Davies at National Museum Cardiff on 21 June 2012 as part of Gregynog Festival 2012: Venezia (artistic director, Rhian Davies).
